Thank you candidates for your interest in the scholarship and for giving us the opportunity to know you through your work. It was a challenge to select one winner from a pool of great candidates, who have exceeded academic and social excellence. Won by the majority of votes,  Miss Ai-Tram Bui of Newington is VietCT.Org’s Scholarship Winner for the school year 2010-2011.

Congratulate Miss Bui and we wish you all the best of luck in your future endeavors.

Judging Guidelines

The winner of the VietCT.Org Scholarship 2010 shall be chosen by a panel of judges. Each judge has one (1) vote and the applicant who receives the majority number of votes will receive the $1,000.00 cash prize. In case of the tie, the judges will be asked to make a selection between the candidates (who share the equal number of votes).

The two factors carry the greatest weight in the evaluation process should be:

    • Transcript scores are based on grade point average
    • SAT (Scholastic Assessment Test) scores are from the standardized test taken for college admissions.*Please keep in mind the average SAT scores for the year 2009 in the State of Connecticut are as follow: Critical Reading: 501/ Mathematics: 515/ Writing: 493
    • Items should be scored subjectively based on the content and how well the two essays submitted were written.
  • 1. Transcript and SAT scores

    2. Financial need and Vietnamese culture relevant

And last but not least, the overall preparation of the application form and the two letters of recommendation.

Judges

Toan Nguyen of the Vietnamese Catholic Andre Dung-Lac of Hartford
Hoa Nguyen of the Law Office of Hoa Nguyen

What they said

Chi Hoang

Chose:  Ai-Tram Bui
Reason: “Ai-Tram is a well-rounded student
- Academically high achiever
- Intensively involved in community work especially Vietnamese community.
-Very well-written essays.”

Hoa Nguyen
Chose: Ai-Tram Bui
Reason: “Excellent academic credentials. Well written essays. Beyond that, a commitment to her community and Vietnamese heritage evidenced by her extra curricular activities”

Toan Nguyen
Chose: Mike Huynh
Reason: “1- As academic and articulate writing aspect is concerned,  I think Hien Luu of W. Hartford ( Conard H.S) is the best. She’s done very well academically. I’m sure a windfall of grants and scholarships from different sources are coming her way. 2- As financial need and hardship is concerned, Mike Huynh of E. Hartford won my vote. He’s not doing too well academically, family financial is in bad shape due to his father health problem. I’m NOT sure he’ll get any help based on the academic merit. If I have to choose a winner, Mike Huynh is the one. $1000.00 will be more appreciated by the one who has the least. Others will be able to get by with their talents and connections.”

Hang Le
Chose: Kathy T. Pham
Reason: “Completed all the requirements esp. the financial needs.”

Trong Truong
Chose: Ai-Tram Bui
Reason: “2 letters of recommendation are very good for Ai Tram. Class A for 3 successive class 9,10,11 (GPA 4.21 & 12th of the class). Exellent effort participate well in class, SAT test score 770 in Math. Youth Buddhist Asso, Vietnamese Cultural dance, fundraiser & help disabled children.”
